The Roadmap to 2050 is designed to serve as a compass for navigating uncharted waters—together. It outlines a collective, coordinated approach with quantified goals that engage and empower every stakeholder in the yachting industry. By committing to this roadmap, yachting companies can future-proof their operations, not only advancing decarbonisation but also moving towards a regenerative future.

Sector specific targets: Refit
Two-third of the existing fleet was built in the last 25 years. Meaning that a growing wave of yachts is reaching an age that calls for a significant refit.
With the fleet continuing to grow, the refit sector will follow suit. This means that the refit activities will only increase, and therefore the emissions from energy, waste and water use of the refit process as well, while the impact needs to be reduced towards zero. Hence the targets are based on an increasing fleet and refit activity scenario, having taken into account the same growth projections as for the operations of the existing fleet.
The data exercise showed for instance that refit comes with more hazardous waste than the new build process. Also refit is where components are taken from board to be replaced and the old parts would need to get disposed, which comes with specific challenges for the refit sector. Impact from this can also be avoided by different design and build choices at the start of a yacht’s life time. Showing that the solutions for improving yachting’s environmental impact requires a life cycle approach and collaboration to improve among all spectrums, rather than working in silos.
