Dykstra Naval Architects brings over 50 years of experience in design, redesign, naval architecture and marine engineering of classic and modern performance yachts and offers preliminary and concept designs for both pleasure and commercially operated yachts.

“Founded in 1969 by Gerard Dykstra, and now led by CEO Thys Nikkels, the team at Dykstra is comprised of passionate sailors actively sailing our own designs and redesigns. Using first hand practical experience combined with in-house developed software to provide expertise in spars, rigs, and structural analysis that is current, tested and tried.

Concept design and Innovation
The combination of sailing experience, skilled engineers and passion for new and sustainable techniques drives Dykstra Naval Architects to realize the most challenging concepts. Great examples are the Dynarig and Aerorig concepts. These ideas can now be used to create new perspectives in yachting and create a new chapter in the yachting history.

Research and Development
To realize these concepts, the engineers use first hand practical experience combined with in-house developed software to provide expertise in spars, rigs, and structural analysis that is current, tested and tried. The designs are modeled and tested in wind tunnels and towing tanks. These results are compared with classical theoretical hydrodynamic and aerodynamic models. To analyze design details CFD can be used. Dykstra Naval Architects is often asked to contribute in other projects to design and research the rigging and sailing plan. Constant research is done for new methods and materials, both by University Interns as by the Dykstra Naval Architects team. A combination that proved to work well to keep everybody in touch with latest technology.

Re-design and Performance optimisation
Dykstra Naval Architects provided the Naval Architecture and re-design for some of the most challenging refits. Great examples are the 2 mast schooner Adela, 3- mast schooner Adix, JK7 Velsheda, JK3 Shamrock V, J5 Ranger and JK4 Endeavour, SY Athena, Meteor and many others.”

Feadship fundamentally believes that the future has to be different. Traditional luxury standards such as quality, craftsmanship and rarity with a price premium, while important, are just part of the package.

Now, clients want to see corporate social responsibility and sustainability as part of a shipyard’s overall brand. Feadship, alongside developing shipbuilding technology, has spent considerable sums on their own facilities so that the environmental footprint of both yacht and shipyard are considered as one. There is a fine line as to whether a shipyard should develop future technology or a client should challenge them to do so. Feadship has made a commitment that the industry needs to match: to deliver emission-free yachts by 2025 and an emission-free construction process by 2030.

Part of this is building yachts capable of using alternative fuels – even a combination of fuels. Hydrogen and diesel is a possibility. Tier III regulations have made the industry progress with cleaner fuels, including bio-diesel that is not even a fossil fuel. Availability is one issue to be overcome, but as strategic industry we can drive this development. SCR is an acronym for technology that almost reduces NOx exhaust toxins to zero. The only issue has been the need for a large tank to hold the neutralising liquid. Feadship has developed Oxywash© to solve all of these problems.

Clients, designers and shipyards have to work together to refocus the concept of the private yacht. For example, to integrate electric, hydrogen, synthetic, solar and wind. Enlightened clients drive progress.

Why Feadship supports Water Revolution

“Sustainability is a focal point within Feadship, integrated within the yards, the design process, the final product and our own behaviour. We feel responsible for keeping the oceans clean as experience of sailing on a superyacht goes hand in hand with preserving nature and water quality. Sustainability extends far beyond our own organisation. Feadship is one of the founders of Water Revolution Foundation, a frontrunner in encouraging all parties involved in the construction and use of large yachts to take responsibility for their impact on the environment. This collective aims to develop a global superyacht agenda for sustainability that shares best practices from the industry and stays ahead of legislation by combining innovative strength and coordinating collective efforts.”

Heesen is a Dutch builder of aluminium and steel custom and semi-custom superyachts that offer speed, style and fuel-efficient cruising. Our design, engineering and construction methods continue to evolve and our unrelenting focus on quality, craftsmanship and innovation has created one of the world’s most impressive shipbuilding legacies.

When building our workforce we look for suppliers who can deliver quality with an emphasis on sustainability and future-proofing the lifecycle of a yacht. We were the first shipyard to pioneer an optimised hull form for fuel efficiency (the Fast Displacement Hull Form), and the first to install the Hull Vane® (an underwater wing that harnesses the power of the waves and transforms it into forward motion) in collaboration with Dutch hydrodinamicists Van Oossanen. We are the first shipyard to build an IMO Tier III-compliant fast-cruising yacht below 500GT with Aquamarine. And we continue to build upon our hybrid propulsion offering, equipped with economic mode.

The shipyard is always exploring renewable and alternative energy sources for our yachts and facilities, including harnessing solar power. The patented Sun Tracker technology installed on the roof of our construction halls and offices in Oss automatically dims the interior LED lighting to avoid wasting energy on days where natural sunlight is sufficient. This reduces the shed’s lighting requirements by 25% while our inverter heat pumps increase our facility’s year-round efficiency. And as example of our continuous effort to reduce single-use plastic and waste, all Heesen employees are given a Dopper water bottle customised with their names.

Why Heesen supports Water Revolution

“Pushing boundaries in design, engineering and construction forms an integral part of our Heesen DNA and underpins our commitment to building a sustainable future. We believe the need to preserve the world’s oceans is our collective mission. The solution is also found in the way we design and build our yachts today. At Heesen, we are world leaders in the construction of lightweight aluminium yachts and have pioneered revolutionary new hull designs to increase efficiency, reduce drag and cut down on fuel. By installing hybrid propulsion systems and delivering ultra-efficient fast displacement hulls, we provide owners with more sustainable solutions that make the most of the yachting lifestyle. Together, we can enjoy our oceans and build our yachts sustainably.”
