Switzerland for the Oceans will be hosting an informative and collaborative webinar on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at 17:00 CEST. Together with the Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), we will be presenting the North West Atlantic project of the Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMA) programme.
IMMA Programme Overview
The IMMA programme has mapped 75% of the world’s oceans, primarily in the Southern Hemisphere, and is now turning its attention to the North West Atlantic region. Following the successful completion of the North East Atlantic project, an international team of scientists convened this past May to analyse key research data from the North West Atlantic—including popular yachting areas along the US East Coast, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean Sea. Their goal is to identify critical habitats for marine mammals. This research is crucial for guiding future international marine policies, both regulatory and voluntary, to ensure that commercial ships and yachts can coexist harmoniously with marine life.
Webinar Highlights
During this webinar, we will explore how a thriving marine environment enhances the various blue economy communities, including yachting, that depend on healthy oceans. This event will bring together marine scientists and yachting representatives to emphasise how effective a joint commitment to the ocean could be.
Aligning the yachting lifestyle with the needs of the marine ecosystem will determine our industry’s future as ocean stewards. We invite you to join us in this dialogue as we discuss the future of our oceans and the mutual benefits they offer.
Help Shape the Future of our Oceans
Supporting this programme will help to repair damaged ecosystems, allow marine mammals to thrive, accelerate the removal of carbon from the atmosphere, and provide essential insights for governments and regulatory bodies to implement effective marine conservation strategies. Reinvest in IMMA to directly invest in the health of yachting’s most critical stakeholder.
