About the organization:
Water Revolution Foundation is a non-profit organisation, initiated by a group of superyacht industry leaders who shared the belief that we must change course in order to better look after our planet and as such guarantee a sustainable future of our industry. Through collaboration with industry, environmental experts and scientists we drive and accelerate sustainability in the yachting industry, e.g. through our Yacht Assessment Tool (YAT) and the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI). Together with our educational programme and ocean conservation activities, we facilitate yachting to utilise its strategic position and take the lead in reducing the maritime sector’s environmental footprint.
About the role of the junior engineer:
The role is a combination of technical and operational activities. Activities range from supporting the continuous development of the tools we work on, to setting up new industry standards. From conducting research into sustainable solutions to gathering and analysing technical data, making calculations and reporting/publishing results. This role is a perfect one if you want to gain experience in multiple technical and maritime environmental disciplines. It allows you to gain practical and broad experience, especially on the newest approach to sustainability applied to a maritime sector. You will work with leading companies in the yachting industry on the important topic of sustainability and drive change that affect an entire sector. Besides the technical basis and focus, in this role you also take on some organisational tasks and will therefore be a multifunctional team member, involved in the wide range of our activities.
Your main tasks include:
-Solutions: We have a database of sustainable solutions under development. Suppliers need to be found, approach and invited for a verification assessment, that subsequently needs to be coordinated further.
-Rating yachts: Currently the 1.0 version of our Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI) is being developed through a joint industry project with 11 leading shipyards, 4 naval architecture firms and research institutes Delft University of Technology, MARIN and TNO. You will be providing project support to this ground breaking development and perform the YETI score calculations.
-Joint case studies: Our Yacht Assessment Tool (YAT) is continuously being fine-tuned through setting up joint case studies with our partner companies and conducting life cycle assessments. You will also help our in-house environmental expert with conducting own research projects for assessing new materials and components to enrich the tool.
-ISO standards: In order to further professionalise the global yachting sector, standards are being developed by the industry itself. Through various working groups experts are co-creating standards specifically for large yachts, now also in regards to sustainability and environmental assessment. You will be involved in the development of these new and progressive standards.
-Operational tasks: You will help the executive director in the daily management of the foundation, including organisational and operational tasks.
About you, our ideal candidate:
-You have up to five years of working experience in a naval engineering related position and have a bachelor’s degree or higher in (naval) engineering.
-You have a basic knowledge of LCA’s calculation methods, and are familiar with commercial datasets used for conducting LCA analyses.
-You like a steep learning curve, while already well-skilled in working with basic programmes like MS Excel, Python and Matlab.
-You’re a strong communicator and can present complex matters in a clear and understandable way.
-You have excellent English communication skills in speech and writing as it is the main language in our work. Preferably also fluent in Dutch, Italian is a pré.
-You are well-organised and have a professional and flexible attitude.
-You’re a self-starter, team player and multi-tasker with a can-do mentality.
-You do not mind being away from home from time to time, including the occasional weekend.
You will be part of a small, international, agile team, where each professional is specialised in their own fields, ranging from sustainability to naval architecture and stakeholder management to marketing. There is constant interaction and cooperation, with each team member’s skills complimenting each other. In addition, you will have daily interaction with the industry companies and professionals we work together with. Our Amsterdam office will be your working location.
